Palo Verde is famous for its incredible bird population and is considered one of the best bird-watching destinations in Costa Rica. Hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds gather in the wetlands, including herons, ibis, egrets, spoonbills, and storks.
During the dry season, thousands of aquatic birds migrate to the park because the wetlands provide one of the few remaining water sources in the region. This creates spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities for visitors and photographers.
Besides birds, visitors can also see a wide variety of animals such as:
- American crocodiles
- White-faced capuchin monkeys
- Howler monkeys
- Iguanas
- Coatis and deer
The combination of wetlands, river habitats, and tropical forest supports an extraordinary biodiversity rarely found in other regions of Guanacaste.
